DESIGN
The design of Poko Poko appears simple , but its construction was not . Made from local , renewable timber using regional woodworking techniques , KDa developed an unusual beam structure to support cones made from fibers twisted for strength and stability . “ Intersecting cones of different radii were mind-boggling , even on the computer ,” Klein says . “ Every piece was machinecut and numbered offsite , then assembled like Legos to fit with the steel ring frames for the glazed walls . The Japanese are fantastic !”
Angled sunroofs allow snow and tree debris to slide off and can be opened for temperature control . “ Like funnels , they draw breezes in and release rising hot air to self-cool in the summer , which is really important as people like to keep the doors open ,” says Dytham . The three huts are also air-conditioned , while underfloor heating keeps everyone warm during the winter .

GETTING OUTSIDE In addition to Poko Poko , Matsuda says its Agri-Garden fields and greenhouse are popular in the mornings and early evenings . Guided nature tours and “ forest bathing ” in the outdoor onsen , or thermal hot spring , are also popular .
