Hotelier well-being

the life of a hotelier is not an easy one . In fact , for just about anyone working in hospitality , the demands can be unending and take a toll , both physically and emotionally . This month , our Special Report ( p22 ) focuses on health and wellness trends for guests , ranging from meditation and diet to music therapy and intricate massage . But what hoteliers actually do for themselves is what I want to write about this month .

Whatever you can do to decompress and keep a clear mind and healthy body will aid your performance and relationships — both on the job and at home . If the Sheraton Denver Downtown can gather its housekeepers each morning for yoga and light stretching set to music , why can ’ t the hotel ’ s management team take time each day to do something similarly appropriate ?
It is easy to say what we need to do to better take care of ourselves , but more often than not it is so hard to do . So I called on one of the hotel world ’ s most insightful wellness experts , Peter Burwash , to offer some practical advice . Peter ’ s global tennis management company for luxury hotels and resorts has been in business 40 years , and to meet Peter is to find inspiration , as he is so passionate about wellness and life balance , and he sees way too many hoteliers who don ’ t take care of themselves .
The few times I have met Peter he beams when the subject turns to self-improvement and loves to suggest what hoteliers need to do to survive and thrive . Here is the advice he passed along for you to consider
as you manage your hectic hotelier lifestyle :
Because so many of you have spas , it is easier to eat well and exercise . Stay away from the traditional hotel menu and walk into the spa for lunch . Then , if you can take a catnap , do it . Burwash cited Cornell research that showed a 15- to 20-minute nap after lunch will help you perform so much better in the afternoon . In fact , he told me how years ago hotelier Didier Le Calvez ( now a senior executive with the Oetker Collection out of the Bristol in Paris ) set up a room for his team just for that quick nap .
Next , you must put exercise in your planner . Write it down . Find a time of the day that works and keep that appointment . Peter points out that you wouldn ’ t miss a sales call , so don ’ t miss this important meeting with yourself . He adds that hoteliers who routinely put exercise on their schedules are more successful sticking with it .
Lastly , Peter suggests creating an environment conducive to healthy habits . It may be counterintuitive for people who spend their lives taking care of others , but try not to forget about yourselves , too .
