EDGY SINNER PARIS IS IRREVERENT

It was no sin of commission when boutique property group Evok Hotels Collection hired Tristan Auer Studio to create fresh and distinct interiors for Sinner Paris , its third destination in the City of Lights .

With a location in Le Marais , a district known for cutting-edge shops , restaurants and hotels , devising a concept with extraordinary flair could have proved daunting for many interior designers .
Fortunately , the founder of the Paris-based practice , Tristan Auer , was prepared . “ I had an idea in my mind before a project location was even known ,” he says , “ a design that would play with the religious codes of the collective unconscious .”
It was a stroke of luck when Evok asked him to design a hotel along the Marais ’ Rue du Temple , a street named after the Knights Templar , a powerful Catholic military order that once controlled the area . And thus , Sinner was born .
The former telecom office building was replaced by a new structure that opened in July 2019 following two and a half years ’ construction . Auer ’ s initial concept for the 43 guest rooms , restaurant , bar and spa , which had percolated in his imagination for some time , came together in mere days .
RELIGIOUS ALLUSIONS Tongue-in-cheek allusions to religious symbols permeate the interiors , although Auer says nothing specifically references a particular faith . Deconsecration of church items was not required .
“ Over 90 % of the elements in my design were custom-made ,” he says . “ I wanted an escape from all the digital trends . Some artistic objects like candleholders in the guest rooms were sourced . However , everything else is new but made to look old .”
