The latest generation , born between 1996 and 2012 , is still young , but its older members are beginning to hit the workforce . In contrast to their millennial seniors who were shaped during the prosperous 1990s , Gen Z came of age in an era of recession . It ’ s a harsh world where not everyone gets a participation trophy .
In the workplace , that means that salary and benefits are important , and Zs are just as competitive as millennials are collaborative . But Gen Z also wants jobs that are meaningful and make the world a better place , human resources experts say . “ They ’ re concerned about the future of the planet ,” says hospitality recruiter Keith Kefgen .
