“ We have rarely seen a hospitality school doing a good job at teaching students the basics of online distribution ,” responded Max Starkov , president and CEO , Hospitality eBusiness Solutions , New York City . “ The result is a new generation of hospitality professionals who enter the workforce unprepared for the realities of online distribution . No wonder the OTAs generate 74 % of all online bookings and room nights for independent hotels in the U . S .”

Balancing portfolio growth with brand standards is always a challenge , but especially for Olivier Lefebvre , head of hotel activities for LVMH

While the company expects to add six or seven properties over the next five years to its current portfolio of two operating hotels , Lefebvre told HOTELS he will walk away from any deal when the partner , the architect or the space is not right .
“ We are looking first for destinations that can attract the high-end luxury market we target , and in any market we want to be number one ,” Lefebvre said . “ In St . Barth , for example , that is why we looked at Isle de France — the only hotel we would consider there . There are no more than 50 destinations that can attract the level of guests we want and allow us to achieve the RevPAR at a level high enough
to be profitable .”

Peter Bates , president and founder , Strategic Vision , Tarrytown , New York , launched his new blog , “ Luxury Travel Report ,” asking HOTELSMag . com readers if they think the travel industry ’ s mega trade shows are outdated . He posited the shows still have their place , but that booth operators should spend more time booking appointments in advance and focusing on conversing with passersby . “ What should be gone , though , are strategies that simply don ’ t work ,” Bates wrote .
