The stripped-back , DIY-chic hostel , the Superbude St . Pauli in Hamburg , has come of age in today ’ s mid-market lifestyle hotel space . From pipes to pegs to shelves , raw materials meet polished finishes to form wall-less closets with industrial , high-style appeal . A simple set-up with a luggage rack and pipes creates spaciousness at the Hyatt Place Frankfurt , the brand ’ s first in Germany . “ We ’ re moving away from the narrow ‘ corridor ’ effect of walled entry closets ,” explains Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk , co-managing director of JOI-Design , who developed the interiors . “ Wall-less closets make rooms lighter and free up space for us to play with unconventional storage ideas that create the feel of a contemporary private apartment .” The team ’ s European prototype for the Moxy brand , to be unveiled in Frankfurt this autumn , also integrates open closets .
At the Moxy Times Square , Yabu Pushelberg ’ s interiors capture every bit of valuable New York City real estate . A wall-to-wall pegboard holds whatever can be hung , while wood-frame beds incorporate storage nooks below mattresses . With space at a premium in London ’ s Hotel Indigo – 1 Leicester Square , too , Michaelis Boyd designed a multipurpose framework holding everything from clothes to books to toiletries . For Canopy by Hilton at The Wharf DC , the brand ’ s first North American property , not only does Krause Sawyer ’ s “ uncloseted ” concept save space , it eases unpacking and helps guests feel confident items aren ’ t left behind .
Luxury hotels have begun to see the benefits , too , with André Fu ’ s interiors for the Kerry Hotel in Hong Kong , the Shangri-La brand ’ s new flagship , incorporating custom-built open closets in each guest room .— A . S .
