SENSE OF PLACE

“ Local ” has long been a buzzword in hotel F & B , and it is hotter than ever in design as well .
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan has transformed its 42 villas to make them more authentically Balinese . Koichi Yasuhiro of Tokyo ’ s Design Studio SPIN aimed to reflect Balinese architectural style , tradition and culture in the redesign . All the villas ’ materials are from Bali , including traditional ikat fabrics , shell and coconut and Balinese handicrafts .
Swissôtel Métropole , Geneva this past March unveiled 12 “ signature rooms ” inspired by its alpine surroundings and including wallpaper custom-designed by Swiss textile manufacturer Jakob Schlaepfer that symbolizes the Swiss Alps ’ seas of flowers .
Sometimes local influences are more subtle , yet still significant . At the St . Regis San Francisco , Theresa Fatino recently refreshed the original lobby design by Yabu Pushelberg to create an intimate sense of the surrounding city within the massive hotel . Hues of grey , silver , smoke blue and champagne aim to conjure San Francisco ’ s iconic fog while artwork reflects the influence of neighboring cultural institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Palace of Fine Arts .
