“ Several years ago , it was maybe just a traditional meetings space , the audiovisual components and snacks , but now we ’ re frequently seeing some kind of engagement beyond the traditional ice breaker ,” says Avery Fletcher , Belmond ’ s divisional director brand and marketing for North and Central America and Caribbean . “ The meetings activities we ’ re seeing with groups are looking to connect with the destination , the history or the property in some way , and culinary is one of the best ways to do it .”
Such extravagant — and not inexpensive — activities typically attract groups that are rewarding members , or are executive groups or board meetings , she says , with price points varying by property . It helps that Belmond owns the trains or cruises that can be added to group activities . “ It ’ s a competitive market , and groups have a lot of options ,” Fletcher says .
But if a meeting or event is successful , very often , the same company will look to another Belmond property for their next meeting . “ We already know the group ’ s logistics , but we can give them a completely different experience ,” she says . “ Maybe we wowed them in Peru so we can then bring them to Mexico the next year , and they can have another experience that ’ s just as enriching , but it ’ s also completely different .”
