ABOUT THE RANKING

Data for HOTELS 325 is gathered through an online survey completed by hotel company contacts . Individuals are asked to report the number of guestrooms and hotels in operation systemwide as of December 31 , 2018 . Companies that do not respond are subject to an estimate through public records , previous years ’ data , industry sources and independent research .

In some cases , rooms and hotels are counted more than once because HOTELS chooses to separately report data from owner-operators , managers and franchisors on the same list . Thus , a single property that is owned by one party , managed by another and branded by a third would be counted three times . Furthermore , this ranking omits companies that exclusively or overwhelmingly own hotels ; only companies that also manage , own and operate , or franchise hotels are included . As a result , REITs and fund-owned hotel groups are excluded .
Unfortunately , there are some inconsistencies in reporting from year to year due to discrepancies in reporting by companies listed in the ranking .
NOTEWORTHY CHANGES
• Several changes in the ranking reflect mergers and acquisitions made in 2018 . The biggest change comes from Shanghai ’ s Jin Jiang International , which took majority ownership of Radisson Hotel Group and Radisson Hospitality AB , making it the second-largest hotel company in the world . Another noteworthy change is Minor International , which jumped to 23 from 68 after acquiring NH Hoteles .
• The most noteworthy newcomer is India-based Oyo Hotels & Homes , which debuts at 8 with 515,144 rooms , mostly as hotel franchises in the budget segment throughout India and China , but also with vacation and multi-room rentals .
• Among mergers reflected in this year ’ s listing is Wyndham ’ s acquisition of the La Quinta Inns & Suites brand .
• Associated Luxury Hotels International ’ s consortia listing still includes WorldHotels , which it sold to Best Western Hotels & Resorts early in 2019 .
• In last year ’ s ranking , Interstate Hotels & Resorts should have been listed with 67,958 rooms and 390 hotels , which would have put its rank at 25 .
• Omitted from last year ’ s ranking were Greenland Hotel and Tourism Group and Playa Hotels & Resorts . Others listed this year were likely eligible last year , but accurate data was not made available .
