ABOUT THE RANKING

Data for HOTELS 325 is gathered through an online survey completed by hotel company contacts . Individuals are asked to report the number of guestrooms and hotels in operation systemwide as of December 31 , 2017 . Companies that do not respond are subject to an estimate through public records , previous years ’ data , industry sources and independent research .
In some cases , rooms and hotels are counted more than once because HOTELS chooses to separately report data from owner-operators , managers and franchisors on the same list . Thus , a single property that is owned by one party , managed by another and branded by a third would be counted three times . Furthermore , this ranking omits companies that exclusively or overwhelmingly own hotels ; only companies that also manage , own and operate , or franchise hotels are included . As a result , REITs and private equity companies are excluded .

NOTEWORTHY CHANGES

• The biggest change to this year ’ s ranking is the separation of Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group ’ s ( now Radisson Hotel Group ) portfolio from its owner , HNA Group . A separate HNA listing includes its owned and operated hotel portfolio .
• Several listings reflect mergers and acquisitions made in 2017 . However , deals made early in 2018 are not reflected in this year ’ s ranking . For example , La Quinta Inns & Suites has its own listing , as it was not acquired by Wyndham until this year .
• Some groups made significant jumps or falls in the rankings ( Club Med jumping to 34 from 62 , for example ) due to inaccurate reporting in previous years .
• Several new groups joined the listing , especially those from China such as Zhuyou Hotel Group and Anhui Gujing Hotels Development Co .
• Some companies have rebranded in 2018 , but the new names will not be reflected until next year . For example , Londonbased hotel management company Redefine | BDL Hotels in May 2018 rebranded as RBH .
• Hotel companies that have sold stakes but remain autonomous ( AccorHotels ’ stakes in Rixos and Banyan Tree , for example ) still maintain their own rankings .
