“ The Dutch have an appreciation of quality and subtle sophistication and enjoy a witty playfulness in daily life ,” Payer explains . “ No other word encompasses the heart of Dutch culture as much as the term ‘ gezellig ,’ which literally means cozy or quaint , but can also connote time spent with loved ones . With this in mind , we wanted to create a space that was classic and timeless , embodied this Dutch philosophy and respected the tremendous history of the buildings . This philosophy extends to spaces such as the food and beverage outlets as well . Peacock Alley , for one , features detailed columns , flowing drapery , hand-blown glass and classic furniture in addition to its centerpiece — a Waldorf Armillary Sphere — intended to reference the property ’ s ties to sailing and trading .
Payer says Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam targets both business and leisure luxury travelers from around the globe and has been operating at nearly full capacity since its opening . Average rate has been € 487 ( US $ 662 ), according to Payer , who adds both foot traffic and positive press also have been abundant .
“ From the feedback we have received thus far , guests are very impressed with the property ,” Payer says . “ At only 93 rooms , we are able to offer extremely personalized service . I hope that guests and visitors feel at home .”
