THE END OF TRADITIONAL ROOM SERVICE ?

While there was plenty of news that came out of the New York University International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference in June , one item that seemed to steal everyone ’ s attention was the announcement that the 1,980-room New York Hilton Midtown is ending its traditional room service .
Jeff Weinstein , HOTELS editor in chief , wrote on his blog , “ Despite the spate of negative press Hilton has received the past few days , I say kudos to Hilton for stepping out and taking a chance to fix a delivery system that really works for no one . It feels like the start of a trend .”

Kempinski Hotels has ambitions for more presence in Asia . Vice Chairman , President and CEO Reto Wittwer lists Japan as a top priority , especially Kyoto , Osaka and Tokyo .
Tokyo is also on the want list of Peter French , president of Raffles Hotels & Resorts . Immediate openings are Jakarta , Indonesia ; Sanya , Hainan Island ; and Warsaw , Poland . Now he hopes to find projects not only in Tokyo but also in London and New York City , not to mention the Maldives , Myanmar and Qatar .

Under the new leadership of interim CEO Yann Caillère , Accor announced in May a brand refresh for Pullman Hotels and Resorts that includes lifestyle-inspired design features as well as a new brand symbol and a US $ 30 million marketing campaign .
Caillère also said Accor is moving ahead with reconfiguring its portfolio to comprise 40 % managed , 40 % franchised and 20 % owned and leased hotels .
