Of all the headline-grabbing environmental concerns of recent years , zero waste arguably has captured the interest of hotel operators across the spectrum . And why not — curtailing wasteful practices isn ’ t just good for a hotel ’ s sustainability profile , it ’ s also a way to achieve a healthier bottom line .
The Zero Waste International Alliance defines zero waste as “ the conservation of all resources by means of responsible production , consumption , reuse and recovery of products , packaging and materials without burning and with no discharges to land , water or air that threaten the environment or human health .” More realistically , it ’ s been defined as diverting at least 90 % of waste from landfills and incinerators .
Many individual hotels and hospitality companies have made great strides in reaching zero waste through a mix of strategies . Here are some of the best ways to approach it .
