While I was the General Manager of the Semiramis InterContinental Cairo and living onsite , my wife and I employed a young man from housekeeping to clean our apartment . One day I asked him what his ambition was in life . He wanted to work in F & B , but felt that might be out of his reach . With our help he improved his English , and enrolled in a basic hotel supervisory course . Following that , I spent a half-hour with him most days to coach him in simple leadership concepts . This gave him the courage to speak to his boss about his career aspirations .
Today this young gentleman , Hassan , is a Restaurant Manager at the hotel . In several short years he went from cleaner to Restaurant Manager , and I consider that a huge success .
