Passion for hospitality

Call me old-fashioned , maybe even a little naïve , but I love to romanticize the hotel business . I still have visions of the golden age of travel when GMs greeted you in the lobby and a hotel experience was considered a special occasion . And you know what ? Despite commoditization , the information age and the explosion of social sharing , my notions still exist in many corners .

There are still special places and inspiring people in this business , reflecting an abundance of soul . So , in keeping with this vision , this month marks the debut of a new tag line for the HOTELS brand : “ A passion for hospitality .”
After more than a year of internal review and strategizing , we concluded such passion is the bond that unites all of us in this industry . As a result , in addition to our continued coverage of trends , ideas and best practices , we are going to write more about the art of hospitality and tell more stories about the interesting and often elegant people around the world who drive this business forward .
Our readers are a special breed . So many of them are always turned out with aplomb — never a scratch on their shoes nor a wrinkle in their shirts . They can host royalty and mentor ragamuffins . Only those with a true passion for their profession would love and can manage this lifestyle and these responsibilities .
Of course , the lives of 24 / 7 hoteliers are not all glitz and glamour . They are the ones working holidays when their hotels are full . They have to juggle the demands of their owners with the needs of their
families . So why do they do it ? Passion . They have a passion for service excellence and perfecting the art of hospitality . They understand the beauty of delivering the most basic of life ’ s needs : shelter and sustenance . More than a job , hotelkeeping is truly a calling they can ’ t ignore .
With that in mind , this month we introduce our first People issue and an ongoing series , HOTELS Legends . For the former , we identified a dozen fresh faces making a mark in the business by bending the rules a bit and injecting new ideas and new energy to their respective roles .
Choosing our first Legend was easier . Bill Marriott — the understated leader who has hired millions and is on the verge of unveiling Marriott ’ s one-millionth room — was the obvious choice . His messages are simple but make as much sense today as they did when he started to build his hotel empire . Along with the feature here , you can go to hotelsm . ag ./ BillMarriottvideos and find highlights of the video interview with a true living hotel legend .
We hope you enjoy this special issue and are excited about our renewed vision . Please let me know what you think by emailing me at jweinstein @ hotelsmag . com .
