Growing up in Taipei , Marissa Hou ’ s parents owned two hotels . She realized , early on , that she was destined for a career in hospitality . Fluent in Taiwanese , Mandarin , and Japanese , she was poised to excel in the field , but desired to learn more about the business aspects of hotel management to progress from frontdesk operations to strategic leadership .
In New York City — home to some of the world ’ s top hotels — she enrolled in the M . S . in Hospitality Industry Studies offered by the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies ( NYU-SCPS ) Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality , Tourism , and Sports Management . She interned at Hersha Hospitality Management , learning strategies to maximize hotel revenue while gaining an insider ’ s understanding of hotel performance indices . Upon graduation , Marissa worked in sales and revenue management before joining the pre-opening team for one of the top hotel organizations in the world . With the knowledge she gained , she has taken her career to new heights as the executive meeting manager for the Courtyard and Residence Inn by Marriott / Central Park .
