FIND YOUR

INSPIRATION

I

never lack for inspiration , as there is almost always something new in the hotel business . Take this month ’ s issue of HOTELS , for example . Six Senses has new , seasoned leadership in former Four Seasons executives Neil Jacobs and Wolf Hengst ( p . 10 ). Will the company ’ s deal pace quicken as a result ? Facebook has a new head of travel in Lee McCabe ( p . 12 ). Will the world ’ s most popular social media website become an important revenue source for hoteliers ? Starwood Capital ’ s management company has a new leader in C . Scott Rohm , who more or less has a blank canvas to create the Baccarat and 1 brand experiences ( p . 14 ). Read how Hilton partnered with an irreverent publication like The Onion to stand out from the advertising clutter ( p . 10 ). Women like the uber-responsible Claire Chiang of Banyan Tree are showcasing their human spirit , hoping to set an example for the betterment of global travel and tourism ( p . 30 ). I only hope more companies follow her lead . Stories like these are what keep me enthusiastic and hopeful about the hotel business and its wildly positive future .
But what really gets me brimming is HOTELS annual announcement of the Hotelier of the World award nominations ( p . 8 ). While only two candidates can win , all the nominees are so deserving of the recognition .
This year , we have another stellar group of hoteliers who represent everything that is great about the time-honored tradition of thoughtful hotelkeeping , and while the award tends to represent lifetime achievement , these operators are still pushing the envelope and setting the standard for service and
Editor In Chief profitability . Please take the time to vote and help us continue a tradition now in its 33rd year .
All I have to do is look at the list of previous winners to know it is truly the Hall of Fame for hoteliers . From the first winners in 1981 — Accor ’ s Pelisson and Dubrule — to Bill Marriott Jr . and independents such as Carmen Bucher Wirth of the Hotel Hassler in Rome and Kurt Wachveitl of The Oriental in Bangkok , these greats should be inspirations for the next generation of hoteliers .
In fact , I want to encourage younger hoteliers to search the web and read stories about the greats from this business . In fact , send me an email , and I will send you a list of our past winners to research . Understand their motivations and the decisions they made that helped them reach greatness . These are the stories that motivate me to keep writing about this business , and I hope the greatest hoteliers are inspirational to the point that I will be writing about you next .
