guests are on leisure , and Jetwing says it is receiving an increasing amount of guests from the Middle East and India . Jetwing is looking add eight properties within the next three years .
“ The locations are Yala National Park , Colombo , Kandy , Dambulla , Jaffna , Trincomalee , Pasikudah and near Knuckles mountain range . Construction of the Yala property has begun ,” says Hiran Cooray , chairman of Jetwing . “ In terms of RevPAR , occupancy and ADR , our portfolio is performing the best ever .”
Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces , Mumbai , has operated in Sri Lanka for the past 30 years and currently has three properties . It owns both the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo , and Vivanta by Taj – Bentota . It manages The Gateway Hotel , Airport Garden , located in Seeduwa . Most business at Taj Samudra is corporate and MICE , while The Gateway Hotel , Airport Garden is a mix and Vivanta by Taj – Bentota is a beach resort for leisure guests . Currently the company is renovating each property and plans to expand on the island .
“ Occupancy has increased phenomenally since the return of peace to the island ,” says Amal Goonetilleke , Taj ’ s regional director of sales for Sri Lanka and the Maldives . “ Previously average occupancy was at 40 %, and now it is at 70 % across all hotel categories . The rates have increased 40 % to 60 % over the past two years .”
Largest companies looking IHG , Accor , Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide , Hyatt Hotels Corp . and Marriott International do not currently operate hotels in Sri Lanka . But this may soon change .
“ We are looking at Sri Lanka ,” says Daniel Ford , Marriott ’ s executive director of communications , Asia Pacific . “ We believe both Colombo and some of the beach resorts offer great potential for Marriott .”
Marriott has already signed a management deal via special vehicle Luxury Hotels International Management Co . for a US $ 18 million new-build , 150-room beach resort near Weligama on the island ’ s southern coast with local developer East-West Properties , Colombo , Sri Lanka .
Likewise , Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts , Hong Kong , has two large new-build projects , each with an estimated cost of US $ 500 million , planned for Sri Lanka — a 500-room hotel integrated with a multi-use development in Colombo set to open in 2014 and a 300-room resort in Hambantota , also on the island ’ s southern coast , set to open in 2013 .
