According to the group Airbnb’s current pricing presentation and a number of its terms do not comply with the ‘Unfair Commercial Practices Directive’, the ‘Unfair Contract Terms Directive’ and the regulation on the jurisdiction in civil and commercial matters Once Airbnb proposes solutions, the Commission and the EU consumer authorities will review the proposed changes, and if they are not considered satisfactory Airbnb could face an enforcement action. Commissioner Jourová, commissioner for justice, consumers and gender equality, said: “More and more consumers book their holiday accommodation online and this sector has brought many new opportunities to holidaymakers. But popularity cannot be an excuse for not complying with EU consumer rules. “Consumers must easily understand what for and how much they are expected to pay for the services and have fair rules, for example on cancellation of the accommodation by the owner. I expect Airbnb to follow up swiftly with the right solutions.” August 2018 Lifestyle hotel brands Malmaison and Hotel du Vin have announced a number of senior appointments within the business. The news follows the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tourism report published on the impact of the sharing economy on the UK tourism industry in Parliament. It acknowledges the need to provide a level legislative playing field, including the need for sharing economy businesses to pay the appropriate level of tax, the need to ensure customer safety, and to recognise the concerns of local communities. UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls said that while the sharing economy has helped to revitalise and energise tourism around the world there are “serious flaws” that need to be addressed. She said: “This growth is most welcome but, as the report highlights, there are serious flaws with the current system and hospitality businesses are at an unfair disadvantage. “UKHospitality gave evidence to the Group’s report enquiry to raise this issue, so it is encouraging to see the concerns of the sector acknowledged. The report includes compelling evidence that individuals abuse the system, acting in a commercial manner, profiting while putting customers at risk and undermining other hospitality businesses. “ www.hotelowner.co.uk 13
