one of his past lives Buddha unexpectedly
returned from a long and arduous journey
that had left everybody beginning to
assimilate his death. The celebration upon
his reappearance was said to have been so
clamorous that it awoke the dead from their
lethargy.
On the second day, elements of the
traditional Thai rocket festival are held, in
which a number of them are launched to
the skies in what is seen as a merit making
ceremony. The dances and the mask parades
continue throughout the day.
Finally, we come down to the third day of
this festival, during which everyone around
the village gathers in order to listen to
sermons and lectures imparted by the more
prominent and respected Buddhist monks.
Loei is a region that at large has not been
gripped by the trends of mass tourism even
though it has so much to offer to the visitor.
It is equally one of Thailand’s most sparsely
populated provinces, which means that if
you seek a touch of tranquillity and solitude,
it is exactly the place to go to. The Loei
traveller will find bliss in the freshness of its
mountainous breeze and the quietness of its
natural forestland and see side of Thailand
he would have never expected to encounter.
One can conquer the flat plains of some
of the lower hills and bask in the evening
dusk light as the sun sets over the trees to
conclude a productive and relaxing day.
In conclusion Loei is a province one must
truly take the time to travel to. Discovering
its rich and unique culture whilst
simultaneously enjoying the cleanliness
and peace of its environment is something
that can be truly gratifying to the traveller.
Attempt to acquaint yourself over the times
during which the Ghost Festival takes place
and set your travel itinerary accordingly.
You won’t find anything like it anywhere
else in the country!
