eauty pageants started in
Scotland in 1839, the first one
held by the 13th Earl of Eglinton,
and won by the duchess of
Somerset who was proclaimed “Queen
of Beauty”. Ever since, and still today,
the tradition of these pageants continues
both in western and eastern countries.
These beauty contests are, and have
many times, more today than in the past,
been perceived as frivolous, shallow,
superficial, trivial and petty competitions
focused merely on good looks, on
beauty; which is supposed to be “in the
eye of the beholder” and “beauty, which
is everywhere but not everyone sees it”.
These pageants are known to always
target women, which has also caused
critique and upheaval amongst feminists
and protective parents. With time,
and some would argue cunningly and
shrewdly, these have evolved to have
additional criteria for which women
could be judged, for their talent,
personality and intelligence. However,
nothing seems to be as revolutionary
