Human Resources in the Hospitality Industry : the state of matters

According to information reported by Eurostat ( October , 2016 ), Malta has maintained the leading position with regards to hotel occupancy rates when compared with countries in the European Union , with this being the case for the third year running , and covering both summer and winter periods . The tourism industry is now contributing to roughly 15 per cent of the country ’ s gross domestic product ( GDP ) and we have seen the total number of tourists visiting the country increase year on year since 2009 ( this drop being linked to the global recession ) to the point where the influx has now surpassed the 1.6 million tourists annually .

Figures relating to the state of matters in relation to the hospitality industry point a positive picture , with future figures being expected to be on the growth side . In reviewing such rosy numbers , it might appear surprising that challenges to the sector in the near future will possibly be arising from areas relating to human resources .
