The Solana Hotel and Spa is a 177-room property which was recently upgraded to an upscale 4-star hotel. photo: the roof pool overlooking the majestic Mellieha shoreline The Grima family originates from Mellieha itself; John Grima, the father and Chairman of the G3 Group under which their properties are gathered; had gotten into the hospitality business in a roundabout way some 25 years ago by having first started an apart- ment-renting business with his brother. This eventually turned into what the Pergola Hotel & Spa is now. In fact they still cater for a small amount of self-catering units in this hotel. Solana Hotel & Spa was subsequently bought and though there were a lot of varied ideas with what to do with the prop- erty it joined the Pergola Hotel & Spa as a sister hotel. Both are Four Stars. Their business is predominantly in Mellieha because they believe wholeheartedly in its unique importance as a location. And they are already looking forward to further expansions in the area and into hotel classification. Indeed, apart from two à la carte restaurants the family owns, they have recently cor- roborated their importance in the local hospitality sec- tor via a Maltese Fusion restaurant aptly named ‘Prickly Pear’. Prickly Pear is G3 Group’s latest dining concept where the core objective is to delight its patrons with an extraordinary Maltese traditional dining adventure. Importance of IT in hospitality (IT) enabled me to intimately understand today’s operational back-end processes HOSPITALITY MALTA The fact that Daniel has extensive experience in pro- gramming as well as directly in Hospitality IT was defi- nitely a big boost to the two Mellieha hotels. It now was no longer a simple relationship with the sales and corpo- rate departments; through Daniel’s direction, manage- ment was now bonded to the bulk buyers of the industry. Issue 05 45
