PAEDIATRIC SERVICES
M.P. Shah Hospital has now introduced paediatric services. The inpatient ward has been designed
in such a way that the décor and colour scheme exudes a homely and calming feel for paediatric
patients. The rooms are spacious with call bells which enable quick access, piped oxygen which is
available on each bed space for easy reach during emergencies.
The ward has embraced a new primary care model where nurses are fully responsible and
accountable for all aspects of child care and their stay. Nurse to patient ratio is 1 nurse to 4 children,
the best ratio in Nairobi. Through primary care, nurses conduct assessment, diagnosis, planning,
treatment, evaluation and education of patients from admission to discharge. The nurses are trained in
paediatrics and are competent in handling children of all ages.
The paediatric casualty also has qualified paediatricians who are child friendly and go out of their way
to assess, carry out relevant diagnostic procedures and provide treatment plan that is evidence based.
Alongside these, we have consultant paediatricians who run well-baby clinics, neonatal clinics as
well as general clinics. They are available 24 hours and on call basis. They do a ward run every day
including following up children post discharge. The paediatric casualty services are efficient with a
short turnaround time. In addition, we have daily paediatric specialty clinics such as allergy clinics,
dermatology clinics etc.
We also have paediatric nurses who are experienced to handle paediatric emergencies and are child
friendly. Our paediatric ICU and HDU and Neonatal ICU are one of the best in the region..
Our Children's Centres have regular Well-Baby Clinics where parents can attend and monitor their
child's health. Health professionals weigh / monitor children as well as be on hand to give advice and
support on subjects such as sleep, feeding and weaning.
