The disease reporting of wildlife practitioners is gaining momentum. Please email Dr Danie Odendaal
[email protected] to get set up with a username and password. You can then use the site http://vdata.co.za/ . All the wildlife species are not on the system yet, but it will grow with time. The benefits
are that you can also go and look what has been happening in your area and look at your clinic’s trends
over time.
Your input is needed for the Buffalo Disease Risk Management Veterinary Procedural Notice. You
can either give your input directly to DAFF (http://www.daff.gov.za/daffweb3/Branches/AgriculturalProduction-Health-Food-Safety/Animal-Health/information/dahpolicy) or to the group, via the google
group. Input must be given before the 4th November.
The South African Veterinary Council is currently compiling a list of medical devices that may be taken
up in the General Regulations relating to Medical Devices and in vitro diagnostic medical devices of
the Medicines and related substances act, 101 of 1965. The regulations aim to control the quality,
standard, manufacture and sale of these devices by manufacturers/importers/distributors. We need
to decide if darting guns should be considered a medical device and hence the product registered and
subject to quality control by the Medicine Control Council. The benefits are the control of the quality,
but the disadvantage is that new devices may take a long time to be registered. We feel that they are
self regulating as if the quality is poor they will not be used and firearms are themselves regulated.
The congress and AGM is to be brought forward next year due to your request. Please diarise 5th and
6th February.
We are working on “Indemnity” and “Consent to treat” forms for practitioners.
We are also giving some attention to game meat regulations and residues.
Enjoy this great “Hoo-Hoo” issue and a big thank you to Roy and all the contributors. May you the reader be
educated and entertained!
All the best
