tenure he was involved in giving advice to the newly emerging private wildlife industry and writing Codes for the SABS for capture, care and translocation of wildlife. He also wrote guidelines for the humane care of wild animals at Auctions. He was involved in developing barrier fencing guidelines for properties that wanted to introduce elephants, and he became Chairman of the Committee for the Training and Welfare of Elephants. Hym was always ready and willing to share his broad knowledge and experiences with colleagues and wildlife ranchers which earned him deep respect. He was also always passionate about his Jewish heritage and culture. Hym’s tireless work and efforts deserve reverence, because here was a colleague whose passion for conservation was unmatched. Never wanting recognition or financial compensation, his reward was to make a difference for animals across the globe. His list of achievements is immense, and they can’t possibly all be mentioned here. However to name a few:- he was awarded “The President’s Award” by the Transvaal Agricultural Union (1992), the “National Agricultural Scientist of the Year Award” by the South African Agricultural Writers Association (1993), and the Lycaon Award for outstanding contributions to the fields of wildlife conservation and veterinary ecology by the Wildlife Group of The South African Veterinary Association (1995). The passing of Hym Ebedes is a great loss to the wildlife branch of our profession, and personally, I have lost a good friend and mentor who introduced me to the veterinary wildlife sciences during some wonderful student practical employment periods in Etosha during the late 1960’s. Hym is survived by Audrey, their children Simeon, Michael and Gertrude, his stepdaughters Alicia and Tanya, 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathies.
