•
Respiratory depression.
May be Teratogenic
Doxarepram5
• CNS/Respiratory Stimulant
• Used to stimulants in newborns
• Not a substitute for aggressive artificial respiratory
support
• C/I: Mechanical Ventilation, hypersensitivity,
seizure disorders, head trauma, uncompensated
heart failure, severe hypertension, respiratory
failure due to neuromuscular disorders,
pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, acute
asthma, dyspnea, hypoxia not associated with
hypercapnea, Cerebral edema, Increased CSF
pressure, hyperthyroidism
• Adverse Effects: Hypertension, arrhythmias,
seizures, hyperventilation leading to respiratory
alkalosis.
Etrophine HCL
Should be well-known by everyone.
Florfenicol5
• Broad spectrum antibiotic
• Don't use in calves or cattle of breeding age
• Adverse effects: Anorexia, decreaased water
consumption, diarrhea, injection site reactions.
IM injection maybe painful.
• Acts on the 50S ribosome inhibits bacterial protein
synthesis. Broad Spectrum. Good distribution
troughout the body including therapeutical levels
in the CSF.
• Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) – Pasteurella
multocida, Haemophilus somnus, Mycoplasma
• Mean Serum half-life is about 18 hours.
• 10 times overdose showed no long-term effect
other than decreased food consumption.
• Cattle: 20mg/kg every 48 hours.
Ketamine
• Dissociative agent that also inhibits NMDA-
receptors
• Useful in pain control
• Increases CSF pressure
• C/I – Sever blood loss, increased intra-ocular
pressure,
procedures
involving
pharynx,
•
larynx or trachea. Alone for general anesthesia,
increased CFS pressure / head trauma.
Caution: Significant hypertension, heart failure
& arterial aneurisms. Hepatic and Renal
insufficiency. Adverse effects: Hypertention,
hypersalivation,
respiratory depression,
hyperthermia, emesis, vocalization, erratic &
prolonged recovery, dyspnea, spastic jerking
movements, seizures, muscular tremors,
hypertonicity opisthotonos & cardiac arrest. Pain
at injection site.
Medetomidine
• Alpha-2 Adrenergic Agonist
• Sedative analgesic
• C/I: Cardiac disease, shock, severe debilitation,
stressed sue to heat, cold or fatigue. Very young
or old animals. NOT recommended during
pregnancy.
• Adverse effects: Bradycardia, Pulmonary
Hypertension, occasional AV blocks. Hypothermia,
urination, vomiting, hyperglycemia, pain on
injection site. Prolonged sedation, paradoxical
exitation, hypersensitivity, apnea & death from
circulatory failure.
Midazolam
• Benzodiazapine
• Can be given IM unlike Diazepam
• C/I: hypersensitivity to midazolam, acute
narrow angle glycoma, Hepatic or Renal failure,
debilitated or geriatric patients. Coma, shock, or
with respiratory depression.
• Potential respirator depression.
• Adverse effects: local irritation, headache, nausea,
vomiting and hiccups.
Thiafentanyl Oxalate
Should be well-known by everyone.
Tulathromycin
• Macrolide antibiotic
• Very long tissue half-lives
• One dose treatment
• Local injection site reaction. Binding to the 50S
ribosomal site
•
Plasma concentrations peak 15 min after IM
