The Crushing Blow of Defeat Jacob Kromberg The photograph I chose portrays a University of Michigan basketball player walking off the court with his head down in the midst of streamers falling and the University of Louisville men's basketball team celebrating a NCAA Division I men's basketball championship. This particular photograph effortlessly depicts the sad- ness of defeat in sports, and it can also be applied to real world situations. It is fair to say that numerous people in today's society (a majority being that of Americans) have a need to win, no matter the area of competition. The easiest place to find the desire to win is in the sports community, with pressures being placed on not only players and coaches, but on front office executives as well. For example, the NCAA Division I College Football Playoff places an incredibly high emphasis on going undefeated in a team's season, that of course, for only a chance at a cham- pionship. However, the need to win is also found in business offices. As for busi- nesses, their speech is infused with winning language such as "win in a competi- tive market." In a game for two, three, four, or even more, there can only be one winner, but what happens to those who do in fact lose? What do they feel and how 10
