The Phone
As our picture developed, we realized that we were missing a part of our lives that seems to control a vast majority of our time: our smartphones. Whether they are being used to track meetings or deadlines, or to keep in touch with family through social media and / or communication via text or call, phones are always present in our lives. For this reason, we decided to include a smartphone in our picture.
Maintaining the exaggerated dimensions of the picture, we chose to make the phone a sort of countertop. By choosing to make the phone a countertop, we ensured that the phone would be bigger than the person. Again, the feeling of sublime is represented within the room symbolizing our daily lives.
On the phone, we chose to have notifications about missed calls and texts from the subject’ s mother, showing how they were
out of touch from the people surrounding them. We also chose to have a timer set and counting down in order to depict again how we are constantly budgeting and allotting time to certain projects( as seen previously with the calendar and to-do list). While we normally think of a phone as something that allows us to stay in touch with our loved ones and friends, the phone in this picture symbolizes how we have been disconnected from these people by all the tasks we feel the need to complete.
This idea relates to that of anxiety and anguish as depicted by Sartre, as the subject has been made to feel completely separated from society by their inability to answer any calls, texts, or messages from those they care about. In order to exaggerate this idea even more, we decided to have reminders about things that they should be doing with family
