The Greater Bay Area
Korean International School, Bertrand, Max Albert Pierre - 15
The Greater Bay Area is a place containing Hong Kong, Macau and some other parts of China. It has
recently been declared as an official location causing an increase in Business in the local area, tourism, and
has attracted the eyes of some of the worlds’ largest organisations to be a part of the Greater Bay Area in
order to reach their business goals and they believe that this is the right place to do it, containing their target
audience, a low cost of production and a high revenue. For some context, the Greater Bay Area was
officiated on the first of July 2017 containing some major cities including Hong Kong, Macau, and
Guangdong. This could have been viewed as an attempt at bringing harmony and political discretion by
indoctrinating Hong Kong to conform to China’s values before the official transfer of sovereignty.
Nevertheless, this could also bring benefits to all involved parties by improving their businesses by trading
goods and being more lenient towards giving each other a helping hand. This will be further discussed. To
end this introduction, I will be guiding you through the facts and histrionics that make up the Greater Bay
Area.
The Greater bay area contains core and key node cities. Some core areas include Hong Kong, Macau,
Guangdong and Shenzhen. The key node cities are Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan,
Jiangmen, Zhaoqing. Core cities are cities which have an advantage and leadership in the creation of this
region and its development whereas Key node cities are mainly used in order to support the core cities as
they have weaker infrastructure and are in a less important position in this area.
This area creates countless opportunities for all involved parties to benefit from. This could increase the
revenue on housing, due to an increased demand, an increase in government communication and better
business for the area as a whole.
This would also contain the possibility of creating a positive image for the leaders of both sides in relation to
their citizens as they are currently having protest, possibly resulting in the feasible resolution of this now out
of hand topic.
Nevertheless, this could also be seen as a move towards the hostile takeover of the chinese government
controlling both Hong Kong, and Macau prior to it’s inevitable handover possibly received negatively Hong
Kong’s citizens and could possibly be the reason for more possible protests as a way to express their political
angst and resentment for the recent actions the police and China have taken against them.
Anyways, to move past political discussions, the Greater Bay originated the 7th of December 2016 when the
people’s Republic of China suggested the idea at the “Year plan for economic and social development for
China” as a proposition and hopeful chance to benefit all involved parties in order to sustain themselves and
support their greater good.
One of the reasons for the implementing of the Greater Bay Area was to create a passageway between all
regions of this area with bridges such as the Huangpu Bridge in Guangzhou going towards Guangdong, The
Nasha Bridge from Dongguan to Guangzhou, The Hong Kong- Zhuhai Macau Bridge, The Humen Pearl
River Bridge, or lastly the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge. In addition to this, a large number of “Urban
Rails” have been developed in their designated City, such as the Hong Kong MTR, the Shenzhen Metro,
the Dongguan Rail Transit, Foshan Metro, Macau LRT, Zhuhai tram and others are still under
construction. On top of this airports and inter-city trains have also been used as a common mode of
transport between cities.
In retrospect, due to China’s suggestion of this area, this could lead some to believe that China had no
choice but to propose this due to the inevitable benefits this would bring to their economy and those they
