The Greater Bay Area King George V School, Shetty, Reva - 13 The Greater Bay Area. Can you imagine that? A place combining Hong Kong, Macau and 9 cities in southern China, three places all with the same roots, yet so diverse. The Greater Bay Area Initiative, unveiled way back in February 2019, aims to stimulate the world’s second largest economy by taking several steps such as increasing the financial link between the countries, developing and enhancing technology and innovation and improving infrastructure in all three places, securing a good quality of life for citizens. It will have twice as much of the population of Canada, consisting of around 70 million people, having an area of 56,000 km per square, and having a GDP of US 1.39 trillion. The GBA only occupies less than 1% of China’s land, but it further contributing to 12% of the GDP. In 2017, Now, even though some benefits of the GBA are guaranteed, what would each place bring to the mix? We will be further looking into the strengths of each area and will see how that will help the GBA flourish and become more successful as a whole. Let's first start with Hong Kong, our home. Hong Kong is able to surpass many countries on levels such as internationality, connectivity, diversity and transportation. The city is also dubbed as one of the world’s busiest cities, thus “one of the cities that never sleeps”. Hong Kong is largely known to be one of the world’s largest thriving economies, being one of the top four global financial centres alongside London, New York and Singapore and a hub for businesses and international trade. This is due to the connectivity of Hong Kong to other countries and cities. Being only within a 5-hour flight from almost half of the world’s countries, it adds to being able to access and enlarge one’s business in other countries as well. It also can tie businesses to trade with China. This is able to attract many people from all around the world to settle in Hong Kong in order to expand their business. Hong Kong has also been deemed the world’s freest economy in 1995, making the city an ideal place to start a company. Hong Kong is also a cosmopolitan city, with a diverse scale of nationalities. This allows Hong Kong to be more open and easier to adapt to and live in for immigrants. Being a cosmopolitan city has its charms, making Hong Kong more likable and attractive to people. The diversity makes Hong Kong appear more sophisticated to outsiders, due to the opportunity to interact with people from so many different backgrounds. This title enables Hong Kong to be presumed as being civilized as there is a fair degree of harmony between the many different types of people. The city is able to provide satisfactory healthcare services. The water treatment and quality in Hong Kong matches those of the quality in foreign countries and meets those of the WHO standards. In addition to having good services, the transportation in Hong Kong is also very efficient and is easy to travel using, which easily making travelling a strong point with Hong Kong. Next, we will look at China our neighboring country. China also excels in many different standards which would highly profit to the making of the GBA. This includes international trading, infrastructure, rich historical culture, overseas investments and cultural tourism. International trade has benefited China as much as doing trade with China has benefited other countries and cities. China has used trade to bring new equipment and technology to modernize the country over the years and to rise economy. Being the world’s fastest growing economy taking over India in recent years, China is the “market of all markets”. This is now being used to the country’s favors as this in turn attracted many companies to start trading with China. Another magnet that luring people to trade and do business in China is the substantially low manufacturing rates higher production capability in the country. Infrastructure remains to be a very important part and priority for China’s government. The country has long realised the various gains of a well-structured and developed infrastructure and has chosen to make that one of the countries focal points. They have done this by advancing the roads, railways, electricity and telecommunications of the country. The government has also used the considerable infrastructure to protect
