Fragrant Harbour and Nine Dragons that Touch the Heart –
A Day in Hong Kong
Regents Primary School of Shenzhen, Mohamed Mahmoud Shawki Abdelshafi Ismail, Mahmoud - 8
During my summer holiday, I travelled to Hong Kong with my family. It was a fabulous journey. Once we
arrived at the ‘Fragrant Harbour’, the literal translation of Hong Kong in Cantonese, I was surprised by the
number of skyscrapers. I felt like I was an ant in the huge city. Nowadays, Hong Kong consists of Hong
Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. However, this summer, we only visited Hong Kong Island
and Kowloon. On the way to Kowloon, I was surprised to see a Rolls Royce and other luxurious cars.
After seeing Kowloon, we went to one of the most famous places in Hong Kong: Victoria Peak. We were
very hungry so we went to a small restaurant located at the top of the Peak and at the same time enjoyed the
beautiful view. The waitress was very kind and recommended dim sum, which means ‘touch the heart’. It
was very delicious and touched our hearts and I’ll never forget the succulent texture and the taste of dim
sum.
After lunch, we went to explore the Peak. Before going to the Peak, I had seen photos and read about it.
However, upon arriving, everything was different from what I imagined. I thought I’d see the Peak as it
was in the time of Cheung Po Tsai that excited me. I genuinely believe that Cheung Po Tsai’s treasure is
still hidden in a quiet place that has not been found yet, but definitely not in his cave. I thought the Peak
would still be a pirate’s lookout, but now there are thousands of tourists and many people are living there. I
was a little bit upset to see this because I imagined that the buildings and scenery would look the same as it
did when pirates were there. Apart from this, we enjoyed our trip to see the views of the beautiful sea and
city. I also tried unforgettable dim sum. I still keep the hope that one day the old look of Victoria Peak will
be restored, at least partly, and it will attract even more tourists. Also, I wish that there will not be long
queues in the future. Hopefully, the capacity, or number of trams will be increased so the trip to the
Victoria Peak will not be clouded by wasting time in queues.
The day was about to end and the time had come for us to leave Hong Kong. I hope that we will all come
back soon as it is now much more convenient to travel there and thanks to the fast check-points, convenient
transport, and the world's longest bridge connecting Zhuhai, Hong Kong, and Macau. Hong Kong is an
amazing, multicultural place with so much to see and explore. In the future, I would like to explore other
provinces in the Greater Bay Area.
