The Revenge of Victor Lai Chinese International School, Lee, Catrina - 12 T here was once a man named Victor Lai. He was a sexual abuse convict and accountant. He had a son named Joey Lai. Joey was his only son and Victor loved him very much. When the summer came, Joey would always drive his father’s minivan to the summer house in Shanghai where he would spend the whole summer vacation. Once when Joey was driving to his summer house, a taxi driver Juan Chen lost control and crashed into Joey’s minivan where Joey was killed. When Victor heard about his son’s death, he vowed to kill Juan. Victor stalked Juan for over ten years since his son’s death and finally found Juan in a night club called Hollywood Shanghai. After Victor located Juan, he pretended to be a chemist and snuck into a chemist store. “Oy you shopkeeper!” said Victor “I wanna have a bottle of chloroform. C’on I’m ’n a hurry.” Victor took the bottle of chloroform and zoomed off towards Hollywood Shanghai. He recognised Juan at the nightclub and soaked Juan’s napkin in chloroform. After 20 minutes, Juan fell unconscious against the floor. Victor picked him up and carried Juan into his minivan. Victor drove to the summer house via Highway 2. He saw a policeman patrolling the border. “Hey you, man with the moustache, I’ve gotta check your identity card and your van please.” said the policeman. Victor handed him his identity card then he quickly stuffed Juan’s limp body into the trunk of his van and let the policeman check his van. The policeman found nothing illegal and let Victor continued his car. When they arrived at the summer house, Victor dragged Juan into the house and bound his hands and legs with ropes. Victor left the house and spent the night in a hotel and when he returned the next morning, Juan was already awake. “I reckon that you ‘re hungry, ay? I will give you a piece of ‘lly stale bread and y’ll shall finish it.” Victor handed him a piece of mouldy stale bread and gave him a jug of water. Juan ate all of the bread as he was very hungry. Meanwhile, Juan’s family was frantic because Juan didn’t return home after his night at the club and they decided to call the police. The police investigated the night club and questioned different people if they had ever seen Juan. A man who reckoned he saw Juan said “I was drinking some beer and suddenly a man fell unconscious against the floor. Then a tall black man with a moustache carried him out to a black minivan and drove off.” The police thanked him for his answer and went back to the police station for further investigation. At the summer house... Victor was deciding what to do to make Juan suffer when he heard police cars in the distance.
