could only gaze at the distance and ponder his next move . I should head back to the crime scene , there may be something that they missed , Chen thought to himself as he realized there may be very little options left for him .
It was a short rickshaw trip from the precinct to the crime scene , as he arrived at the traditional Chinese structure he was reminded of the Toyama ’ s legacy just by its mere sight . The Toyama ’ s , a family that didn ’ t deserve the brutal fate it received . They had always been kind and sympathetic towards the Chinese , despite how all the other Japanese acted . While believing that Imperial Japan were out to bring peace and stability to Asia , the Toyama ’ s however had distaste in the brutal methods Imperial Japan had chosen to adopt during their crusade of reforming Asia . Their residence itself was a protest towards the Japanese ’ s superior attitude , however not much could be done against them , as Mr Toyama had held a position in the Japanese Diet . This only made this case more sensitive , the death of a diet member in China was without doubt a case that could be the beginning of yet another wave of calamity across China . The Toyama residence was kept the same as it had been before to keep the public in the dark , however inside arm guards were kept hidden , standing by as guards to the empty crime scene . Chen made his way into the house after the guards had checked his papers , however not without the customary chatter and sneering behind his back . It had always been so , no matter his position , he belong to neither Japanese nor Chinese there was no place he could truly feel at home . The boy said he was hid under the bed and the Toyama ’ s bodies were found in their bedrooms , thought Chen to himself as he reconstructed the crime in his mind . He quietly made his way into the bedroom , as if to convince himself he was not part of the room and was a witness to the crime that had been committed . Standing in front of the bedroom , Chen saw the dried blood still splattered against the wall where the Toyama ’ s were shot , the bronze flakes peeling themselves off the elegantly carved wooden bed frame . Chen scanned the messy room , which had clear signs of a fight , the broken wooden cabinets and the flipped table all served as testament that the Toyama ' s were not willing to go down without a struggle . Desperate for new evidence Chen then proceeded to flip over all the fallen cabinets and flipped tables , he even went so far as to check the left down pieces of wooden debris . However he couldn ’ t find anything , disappointed Chen rested his back against the wall and slid to the ground , taking out his matchbox and cigarettes he lit one and put it in his mouth and after taking a deep breath , he let out a long sigh of disappointment and frustration . He couldn ’ t find anything , he was back at square one , nothing had changed .
After a brief silent smoke , Chen decided it was time to leave , after all sitting here won ' t get me anywhere he thought to himself . He threw down his still cigarette and prepared to put it out . However , at the same moment he threw down the cigarette , a glimmer on the ground caught his eye . He immediately followed to where the glimmer came from and started running his hand over the concrete floor , desperately trying to find where his glimmer of hope came from . Soon he felt an unnatural pinch in his hand , took out his matchbox and trembling in unsure joy or fear for what he may find , lit a match and put it towards where he felt the pinch . As the golden glimmer resurfaced , he picked something up . Then upon closer inspection , he found it to be the exact same flower insignia that every Japanese officer had pinned onto their collars and shoulders . Chen couldn ’ t believe his own eyes , as he shoved the match light closer to what he had just found . It was without doubt , the exact same flower insignia that the Imperial Japanese officers wore so proudly on their uniforms . They were killed by Japanese ? And an officer at that ? No that can ’ t be . But why , it doesn ' t make any sense . Wave after wave of thoughts shot through Chen ’ s mind , but he simply could place this new piece of the puzzle to make out the big picture . The kid may still know something , Chen thought as he ran back outside . He stood in the street , looking left and right , hoping for a rickshaw to pass by . “ There ’ s no time to lose ,” he muttered to himself , as he started to sprint towards the precinct .
“ Where ’ s the kid ?” Chen yelled out the moment he entered the precinct , “ uh … cell six sir .” reported an officer who was obviously startled by Chen ’ s sudden outburst . Chen dashed towards the holding cells , as questions raced through his mind . He was so close to the truth he could almost taste it . He burst into the cell room , brushed past the snoozing guard and ran towards cell six . He look through the bars and to his shock he found the boy in the fetal position on the ground , under him a puddle of red liquid flowing further with every second . Horrified at what he was seeing , Chen clutched onto the bars of the cell and started yelling “ Get up kid ! Hey Kid !” his loud howls got the cell guard to awake . Chen glared at the guard and screamed “ get me the keys and open this bloody cell , dammit !” the guard still weary and half awake , was clumsy at carrying out the detective ’ s orders , as he stumbled towards the cell door . The guard inserted the cell key to unlock the door , however as he glanced up to see what had the detective so agitated and in shock , the cell guard couldn ’ t help but let out a yelp as he jolted backwards and fell to the ground trembling as he pointed to the motionless body on the floor . Chen flung open the cell door and dashed towards the young boy , turned him over only to see the face of pure shock and fear , the boys twisted features on his face only spelled out how horrifying the assault was . Chen looked down at the open wound , stained all crimson red , with the warm silky red liquid gushing out and gliding through his fingers . It ’ s a blade wound , Chen though as he observed the long sleek gap located at the attendant boys gut . Chen pressed down on the open wound , as a desperate attempt to try and make the blood stop , however was proven to be futile as the red liquid only oozed out of the gaps of his hand . He carried the boy out to the hall and yelled “ someone get this boy help
