appearing every single day with a packet of buns that I firmly pushed away , I decided . I would end this once and for all .
When she appeared through the crack the next day , I turned to her , arms crossed protectively over my chest .
“ Don ’ t come back ever again . I don ’ t need friends . You ’ re not one and never will be okay ? I don ’ t make friends with stuck up rich brats anyway- “
I stopped . I had gone too far . Xiaolian looked at me , her eyes wide , tears evident in the corners of her eyes . “ Oh ?” she said shakily . “ If that ’ s what you want , sure .”
She turned , and pushed through the hole with as much dignity as she could possess . But before she vanished completely from sight , I heard a sob that escaped from suppression .
The day after , the news of Xiaolian being captured came as the talk of the city was passed about . Apparently she had been caught when she was running home , and people found out about the hole in the city wall . She admitted that she did not report it , and was taken away immediately . And she didn ’ t say a single word about me .
Guilt started building up my chest to a point of no return . True friends , friends that would stick up for you , stand up for you , protect you to no cost did exist after all , and even the rich people of Shanghai city could be one .

I ran to the police office at the end of the main street and demanded to see her , to find that her father had already bailed her out , and she had gone home . Without hesitation , I pelted down the street again , like a cannonball being fired , right to the mansion , the guilt propelling me forward .
At this point I did not care anymore . I banged at the door of the mansion , shouting Xiaolian ’ s name , ignoring the caretaker who had once again moved out to scold me away .
As expected , Xiaolian answered the door .
“ Xiaolian !” I said breathlessly . “ I ’ m so sorry ! For all the bad things I said to you ! I ’ m so so so sorry . I didn ’ t- “
I was cut off as Xiaolian reached forward and circled me in her arms in a tight hug . “ Don ’ t worry about it . What are friends for ?”
The rare smile found its way up my face and tugged at my mouth . And she smiled too . I knew , from that moment on , I need not be alone .
