fter a long day of work at the other side of the bank, Peony’s father wanted nothing more than to
wrap his daughter in his arms. As he stepped onto the gently rocking boat, the sun beating down
on his back, he gave a hard thrust with the bamboo pole and slowly floated down the river. He
caught sight of a single peony, floating quietly in the water. Peony’s father was captivated, exhilarated,
invigorated. Forgetting he was still in the boat, he stretched out his arm as far as he could and made a lunge
for the flower.
