Unusual Shadows
Chinese International School, Su, Katy - 10
When JJ turned 18, she joined the military. It was there that she made a trustworthy friend called Lexi. One
day at training, a mist swooshed around JJ’s face. She flinched and saw a shadow disappear down the hall.
She was curious. Lexi also noticed it.
JJ whispered “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
Lexi replied “Yes. Let’s just go!”
JJ grunted.
Lexi cackled. The usual.
“C’mon!” JJ shouted “The shadow probably already escaped! DUH!”
The two girls headed for the hallway. The shadow was fumbling around in its pocket. JJ and Lexi leaned
forward to see what was in the shadow’s pocket. They saw a chain of silver gleaming keys. Lexi was
drooling all over Jayden
“Those keys would be a nice addition to my key collection……” Lexi silently whispered.
JJ said “Stop drooling over me!” and used her hand to push Lexi’s head away.
They saw the shadow unlock the doors of the military base. When the shadow went out, JJ made a hand
gesture to Lexi. They tip-toed out of the door and watched as the shadow got into a sparkling red minivan
at the car park and zoomed onto the road.
JJ told Lexi “Let’s follow him.”
“OK, wait a second” Lexi left and got her pet poodle, Coco.
JJ asked “Why are you bringing her?”
“Just in case!”
JJ rolled her eyes in disgust. JJ and Lexi got on their and raced down the road. They biked as fast as they
could, following the red minivan into the forest.
Suddenly, JJ and Lexi both saw something unbelievable. There were tons of orange-bricked red-roofed
houses, just like the Forbidden City. They were so surprised that they stopped by the dirt path They hid
their bikes in the bushes. Lexi put Coco into the little bag that hung from her side and covered Coco’s
mouth with a soft handkerchief to stop her from barking.
From their hiding place in the bushes, the girls watched as the shadow took the keys and unlocked the door
of the first house. He entered, JJ and Lexi followed him in. It was dark. The floors creaked.
“Muahahaha! Now, that my antidote is finished, I can destroy the world!!!!!”
Coco moved her paws wildly inside Lexi’s bag. Lexi put her hand to stop Coco from scrambling around. JJ
and Lexi gasped.
“No!” JJ whispered “He can’t have it. He won’t!”
“But he does……” Lexi gasped.
JJ and Lexi could see that the shadow was one of their instructors, Dr. Lyons. Lexi had always thought he
was weird. It turned out, he wasn’t just weird…… he was EVIL.
The girls watched him as he placed the vial onto two clasps at the back of what looked like a squirter. He
rolled it to a door at the side of the room. JJ and Lexi secretly followed closely behind. The door led to a
dark passage. They continued through it.
When they got to the end, they saw Lion Rock and as they exited the passage they could Dr Lyons. He
rolled his squirter to the top of Lion Rock. He was about to open the lid of the vial…… until Coco
couldn’t take it anymore. She jumped out of Lexi’s bag and used her teeth to tug the antidote out of Dr.
Lyons’ hands.
