The Afterlife of Walt Disney Shanghai Singapore International School, Sim, Zi Xin Sara - 10 I had finally woken up! Oh, right. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Walt Disney, and I paid an arm and leg to freeze myself. On December 15 th , 1966, the day I died, some scientists froze me hoping that in the future, they would be able to revive me. After what seemed like an eternity, I was finally awakened. However, there was something really strange. Instead of being in a chamber, I was lying on a hospital bed. I looked around and spotted the Hong Kong Skyline. It was massive and just plain beautiful. My jaw dropped to the ground in shock and amazement. I frantically rushed to the window to get a better view, and what I saw made my eyes stretch as wide as saucers. The cars floated in midair like bubbles. The trees had been replaced by metallic artificial structures that produced oxygen. Even the cats and dogs were replaced by robots that were coated with fur. My heart almost skipped a beat when I saw an enormous robot stomping down the street. The world had had many transformations within a hundred years! A billion questions raced through my mind. What was I doing in Hong Kong? How did I get here? Why am I not in Chicago? Just then, a robot entered the room and it said in a very high-pitched voice, “How may I help you?” I anxiously asked, “Why am I in Hong Kong?” The robot explained that after I was frozen, the U.S. was invaded. Chicago was destroyed so, in order to keep me safe, my family decided to ship me off to Hong Kong. “Well, what is the date now?’ I asked. It replied, “December 10 th , 2066.” I nearly fainted! I regained my composure and felt a rumbling in my stomach. Gosh, I’m starving. I need some food immediately. As if the robot had read my mind, it rushed out of my room and delivered some food in a matter of seconds. I realized that food hadn’t changed. I happily ate my Dim Sum, Wontons and a scrumptious roast duck. I decided to explore the “future,” hoping that it could inspire me. I went outside and found a floating bulletin board that had the whole map of Hong Kong. I realized that you can search where you wanted to go. I entered: cinema. Right after I pressed enter, I was being sucked into the map! In the blink of an eye, I was sitting down on a luxurious chair and saw people slurping down cool drinks out of a floating bottle. In front of me was a huge screen that had multiple buttons. One of the buttons was to change the volume. I wanted to change the volume, but I did not want to be rude. Then, I realized that each person had an individual screen. After a while, I decided to explore Hong Kong island a bit more. I went to a nearby floating bulletin board and entered: Chinese Restaurant. As expected, I was sucked into the map. However, instead of sitting on a chair, I was being laid down on a king size bed, with a robot feeding me. There was even a high-tech spoon that could warm or cool your food! I was amazed by the advanced technology. Everyone’s noses were glued to the screens of their phones or iPads. The world felt so lonely and cold, not a sound was to be heard. I desperately wanted someone to talk to, or at least for someone to look up from their phone. I asked the robot for paper and scissors. It gave me a pair of heavy gold scissors and pure white paper. I quickly drew a picture of a princess and a prince. Next, I cut them out and thought of a story. Then I shouted out the story while moving the two figures like a puppet show. Everybody stared at me with wide eyes and gaping mouths. At first, I thought that they had liked my puppet show. Then, it slowly dawned on me that no one understood English. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to dig a hole in the ground and hide in it. Although I had made a complete fool of myself, I still wanted to get people’s eyes off their screens. Suddenly, countless questions popped in my head How could they not like my shows? Am I forgotten? How will I bring joy to the people with my shows if I am forgotten? I need to get famous again in order to spread happiness to others!” I thought up a few short performances that characters did not need to speak. I made a new character, and marched to the famous Hong Kong Disneyland with a confident smile plastered on my face. When I arrived, a deserted land greeted me. They had demolished Disneyland long ago. You could never feel the sorrow and disappointment that I felt. In order for them to rebuild Disneyland, I worked night and day, trying to be famous enough for them to reconstruct the once famous amusement park.
