The Adventures at the Scientist’s Home PLK HKTA Yuen Yuen Primary School, Lai, Katie Chung Yan - 10 Kate opened her door and breathed in the fresh air, it was her second day here in Hong Kong, and she loved it already. She thought of all the things she could do, even though her best friend Kylie wasn’t here, she would move here the day after tomorrow. Last night, she had tossed and turned, thinking of the exploring she could do with Kylie after she got here. “Kylie! Over here!” In the airport, the people wore strange expressions, one was looking angry when there was nothing to be angry with, one was looking sad, one was looking perfectly grumpy. Strange, I just arrived and the airport is already like this, how can I like this city? In the city, even more people were strange, they kept whispering in their phones and sneaking glances at each other at each other, What? Now I hate this city, why do we have to be here? Why can’t we stay in America? Kylie whispered to Kate, “When you came, is the city thi strange?” She took a deep breath, it was clear that she was holding her anger. “Why did my parents choose this city to live in? Why?” They went past a factory, they went closer to have a look. The factory was small, like a house. Grey smoke billowed out the factory. Out of curiosity, Kate and Kylie sneaked inside. Inside, there was nobody, it was as empty as a street at night, not one person passed by, not even one sound was heard. It seemed that there were ghostly spirits haunting the house, which sent shivers down their spines. While they were walking, they passed a small room, they went inside, it was packed with magic potions. The room was full of sparkles. Kate looked through all the things, then, she saw a bottle labelled “Growing potion” caught her attention, under it, it wrote dangerous, do not use unless of emergency. She took it, and wondered how she could use it, hmm… I could use it to scare everyone at school, I could use it so I don’t have to walk far, I could... While she was thinking, a sound interrupted her thoughts, and gave them goosebumps, she quickly grabbed the bottle. A door opened, then a monster stepped out. “Roar! Who dares to trespass on my property! Come here, fight with me, if you win then you get to pass to the next challenge.” He growled menacingly. Kate looked at Kylie, bewildered, fight?! Challenge?! They had no choice but to follow the giant monster to a room full of mirrors. Soon, they had found out the monster’s weakness, it had led them to a room full of mirrors and it can turn anything to stone, so they grabbed a mirror and shone it at the monster, the effect was fantastic, the monster turned to stone immediately. Suddenly as it had started, a small robot came into the room and said, “Well, well, first of all, congratulations, you had passed the challenge. Second of all, good for you, because you can now try to fight me, few people had tried before you, but most people had run away after seeing me. Now, because I am so generous, I will give you a chance, either you can run away now, or you can stay to fight me. But fighting me won’t be easy.” Kate and Kylie looked at each other, baffled. Again, they had no choice but to follow the robot. The robot let them into a room full of bricks. Later, the girls found out his power, his was small, therefore, he could slip under people and trip them up. Kate and Kylie were being tripped up that their bodies were battered and bruised. They ran around, colliding with each other as they ran. In spite of the chaos, Kate thought of the magic potion she took at the room and quick as an arrow, she poured the magic potion on the robot. The robot was growing, right in front of their eyes! Kate looked at it in surprise, not that she hadn’t expected that, but after all, she hadn’t had contact with magic in all her life. In no time, they could escape because they saw the robot everywhere it goes. After they went through the door, they breathed a sigh of relief. After that, a door opened, but nobody stepped out. They looked cautiously inside and to their surprise, an amusement park was there to greet them. After a while, they realised that the amusement park was filled with some magic to attract people to play in the park to forget about why they were here, there were a few other grown-ups madly playing with the slides. The face of the grown-ups there was tired, but they could not stop playing.
