What Happened to Me?
Harrow International School Hong Kong, Wong, Robin - 11
Here at the same cliff, somewhere in Macau perhaps, sands and stones blowing towards her feet. The
coldness of the vast space was daunting but somehow Brooke did not shiver a bit. There was a road just a
few meters from the cliff but no one was there, not a car, not even a single person other than herself. She sat
herself down in the seat on the cliff and found a pair of knitting needles and yarn balls on the ground. It
might sound abnormal to us but she started knitting with red yarn balls that appeared on the ground, she was
fast. Soon, the scarf became so long that it reached the edge of the cliff, it was strangely heavy like there
were thousands of ice blocks clinging to it, heavy enough to drag her close to the edge of the cliff.
Suddenly, a strange thought that she had done this all before came to her head.
She chose to ignore this feeling because there was a more pressing matter to take care of. The scarf
had already dragged her to the edge of the cliff and she was scared, very scared. Hmmph! HMMPH!
HMMPH! HMMPH! HMMPH! She could feel her heartbeat getting louder and faster by each beat. She
struggled to reach her scissors, but her effort was in vain. To buy some time and distance, she decided to
start knitting with her long and blonde hair. Yet, there was no way she could stop herself from being afraid.
The fear of falling overwhelmed her.
Fear couldn’t save anyone. The scarf stilled pulled her down the cliff, it was very lucky of her to
have survived. Whilst catching her breath, she noticed that her hair was cut short, she was overwhelmed and
full of other emotions. She then wanted to quit her obsession with knitting, so she threw her sticks off the
cliff and into the ocean. Just the moment she threw her knitting sticks into the ocean, CLICK! She blacked
out…
Brooke found herself awake again, realizing that she had gone back to the same cliff she was just a
few seconds ago and that she had done this before. Her hair was long, yarn balls showed up once again and
the knitting needles that she thought she had got rid of were still in her hands. The urge to knit arose. But
this time, the scarf did not fall off the cliff and even when she ran out of yarn, she was not scared at all.
Instead, there came a long lost feeling of happiness.
“Why is my life repeating over and over again?”
“Why is this happening to me?” “Is this even real life?” She thought to herself.
mind.
“If I’m dreaming, why can’t I wake up?” More and more frustrations and confusions surfaced her
The fear was attacking her again but in another way this time.
Suddenly, she felt a gentle touch on her arm, as if someone was calming her down. This gentleness
was all around her though she could see no one but herself.
These invisible pair of hands were clasped tight. She missed this feeling of not being alone. She knew
someone was there, she could feel it.
GASP! Brooke found herself in a brightly lit place, she was back at home, in Macau. And there was
her mom, sitting right by her side holding her hand. “M...Mom” she stuttered, “Mom, I...Is that you?”
Brooke softly whispered.
“ Oh! My little Brooke! I’ve missed you! I’m so happy that you’re back! I thought I would lose
you!” Brooke’s mom said almost in tears. Brooke’s mom wrapped a red velvet scarf around her neck and
kissed her on the forehead.
Brooke looked out the window and saw a big mess in the backyard. “Mom? What happened?”
Brooke then felt this sharp pain in her head and felt a bandage wrapped around her head. “Mom! Mom!
