Jing took us to the Yang Guifei section and asked , “ Do you like Yang Guifei ?” “ Of course not .” “ It is most romantic story ever !” “ Beats me . She ' s just a stupid fat princess .” Jing was very disappointed . She said . “ Don ' t ever think about saying that to me . If you say that to me , me I ' m breaking up with you !”
Dan still thought that Yang Guifei was a stupid , fat princess , but now he was scared that Jing would break up with him .
He said to her , “ Don ' t break up with me . Just tell me the story and I will have a different feeling . I promise .”
Jing said , “ OK . I will tell you . It is about how the beauty of one woman threatened an entire empire . It is a story known by millions of Chinese people . And you are the only one who doesn ' t know it ! What a dumb head ! Anyway let ' s get on . It is about an emperor and a princess . The princess was so beautiful ( like me ) that it distracted the emperor from doing his job , which was feeding the country . Instead , he gave all the food to Yang Guifei which left the people starving . Finally the emperor ' s men demanded the emperor to order Yangs execution by strangling her . The emperor , now sad , and lonely , goes to a mystic to talk the spirit of Yang and to tell her ‘ in the next life we will be as two birds flying wingtip to wingtip .”
Dan saw a tear in Jing ’ s eye , and realised it was a beautiful tragedy . He hugged her and said , “ Don ' t cry my cherry blossom . Now I have to go to rehearsal !” He kissed her goodbye . When he came back from Old-Shanghai , he practised and practised . He finally got it perfect .
Months flew by and finally it was the day of the performance . Dan hurried to the make-up room . One kind lady said , “ Sit down .” She put a tight black cap on Dan . He screamed “ aaaahhh !” She put chalk-like make-up on his face . Then his cheeks were painted rosy pink . She pulled back his eyes with tape and painted them black . Dan said “ Oyyy !!” Finally she put a hair-piece on him . She decorated his whole head with jewels .
Dan said , “ Let me look in the mirror .” And in the mirror he saw a beautiful-faced woman with jewels on her head . He said , “ Aaaaaahhh !! Yang Guifei is staring back at me !”
He soon realised that he was Yang Guifei . He felt more confident . The performance was beautiful . There was an old woman in the front row with tears in her eyes . I caught Dan when he walked out of the theatre . He saw me . I told him “ Great job , you are awesome ! You kept our tradition alive !”
“ And since you have done a good job ,” I added “ I want to show you someone special .” Jing popped out and gave Dan a kiss . He felt happy .
