He hunkered down at the edge of the dock over the river and placed the rock carefully beside him . It seemed already well past the time he had originally needed to get home so he thought that if he stayed a little longer it would not hurt . It was quiet as Andre silently gazed up into the sky . The moon was out and full . He stared at the dark navy-blue sky , watching the shimmer of the stars , the movement of the clouds , the silence of the night . Andre closed his eyes and quietly took in the peace .
Only a minute or two later , he heard a slight rocking sound . He ignored it , yet it continued , growing louder yet until Andre opened his eyes . The rock beside him shimmered a brilliant red in the moonlight . It swayed ever so violently until it started rolling . Andre ’ s was stunned and could not recover quickly enough to stop the egg from dropping into the river .
He clutched the edge of the dock watching as the rock — glowing slightly — drifted down into the depths of the river until it disappeared into darkness . Andre blindly took off his coat without thinking , the cold wind piercing through his skin . He leaped into the waters with such grace he could have been just slipping into a thick blanket at night .
The moon lit up the river as he swam deeper and deeper , following the crimson glow as it grew stronger and stronger yet . Within only 10 meters his lungs were already screaming for air , eardrums almost bursting , yet his sight remained as if he were on land , seeing everything underwater with such clarity he could see even the scales on the smallest fish . As he gradually neared the crimson glow , his lungs were screaming , yet still what little air Andre had left to survive on was still lingering in his body . As his feet touched the riverbed , he looked up to see the distance he had swam which seemed around five hundred meters . He felt he was almost alien then .
What Andre saw was what no man had ever discovered before , for there , in front of his eyes , beside the ruby red rock — no , egg — was around half a dozen or so more of the same egg , yet in different colours . They nested in front of a midnight black dragon , which awoke from its slumber . It opened one of its large amber eyes and stared at Andre . A chill ran down his spine . It was as if Andre and the dragon ’ s consciousness were bound together , as if they were one .
Andre knew his life would never be the same . Dragons , were no longer a myth .
