The Old Shanghai
Regents Primary School of Shenzhen, Feng, Kylie – 11
I
woke up suddenly. I open my eyes. Oh! I wondered where I was . It looked like Old Shanghai. I looked
around at the buildings and people. They did not look like the city of Shenzhen. I thought I just had a time
travel. It was exciting! While I was confused, a person touched me. I looked around and saw a person who looked
very much like me, but she was not me.
She told me her name was Alice. It was 1940. I asked her where the Bund was. She told me the Bund was located
by the side of Huangpu River in Shanghai. It represented the scenery of Shanghai and was a must visit tourist
destination in Shanghai. In the late Nineteenth Century, many foreign banks were established in the Bund. So it
was also called Finance Street or Oriental Wall Street. Therefore, the Bund had become a place to encourage
financial investment.
As a result of the historic value of the Bund, a small piece of land in the Bund was not just a symbol of wealth,
but also a symbol of honour. It became the first outline of the city of Shanghai, along Huangpu Road, Yangtze
Road and Huangpu Beach Road. In 1945 it changed its name to Shandong.
The Bund was a barren shoal, along a narrow dirt, for the boatman when walking. At the west of the beach, there
were scattered paths between the huts of tiny spots of ditches. In 1843, British imperialism in Shanghai opened up
a colonial concession. On November 29 , 1845, the Qing government conceded defeat to the British and seceded
the land to the west of the Bund, 830 areas of land for British occupation. Since then, the colonial authorities in
Lijiazhuang Calso were known as Lijiachang, this circular section of Ming Road, southwest of Beijing East Road
near the Bund, built the British Consulate.
Suddenly there was a loud noise of bang! I woke up. I returned to real life . I thought it was a wonderful journey.
I hope I can have another similar journey.
