The New Tales of Old Shanghai Korean International School, Sreejesh, Vedika – 7 T his story is about two girls from different houses in old Shanghai. The two girls were named Pearl and Jade. Pearl and Jade both came from different families. Pearl’s parents were farmers; they lived by farming and selling their produce in the market. Jade’s family were artisans who worked in a Jewel shop. Jade and Pearl met each other at a beautiful garden. After talking for a while, Jade asked, “My name is Jade. What’s yours?” Pearl replied, ”My name is Pearl.” Jade said, “What a beautiful name! Can you be my friend?” Pearl agreed. Then Jade asked “Can you keep a secret?” Pearl nodded. Then Jade began her story. “One day my mom allowed me to go to the park. When I was playing, I saw somebody wearing a black suit with a mask. I saw him holding a big bag of money and the most precious stone in the whole world. He smiled looking at it. When he saw me, he ran away. I decided to follow him. I saw the thief going into a cave. I was scared but I continued to follow him. Inside the cave, I saw a group of people talking to him. One man said, “Did you find the treasure?” The thief nodded. The same man said, “Let’s break it into pieces.” The thief replied, “No! We have to wait till ten moons have passed or the whole city of Shanghai will be lost forever! I was shocked to see such a big gang of thieves. Pearl, we must go and save the city of Shanghai. Are you with me?” Pearl replied, “Yes, I am with you. Let’s go!” On their journey to save Old Shanghai, Pearl and Jade met a monkey who offered to help them. The monkey led them to a river where they saw a dragon. The only way to get across the river was to get the dragon to help. They were scared of the dragon but they were determined to get help so they asked the dragon gently. The dragon agreed to help and it carried them on its back and flew all the way to the cave. At the cave, they met the thieves and the fight began. When the thieves were defeated, they were face to face with the leader. The leader said, “If you fight me and win the battle, I’ll give you the stone.” The group agreed. Then Jade and Pearl tied the leader’s legs together. The monkey tied his hands together and the dragon punched the leader high into the air. They took the jewels and returned them to the Emperor and the Emperor gifted them with special medals. THE END
