‘ Thank you Grandma .’ Savanna said . ‘ Bye .’ Me and Jade chorused . We gave her quick smiles before we stepped out of her house . All three of us stayed silent while walking through the cold streets of Shanghai . Today the streets seemed to be feeling gloomy like us . It was dark , empty and quiet . The lamposts stood over us , as if watching our every move . An eery silence fell over us like a blanket . Jade spoke up . ‘ Your grandma mentioned so many things about Shanghai ’ s past , but there was nothing about ‘ Princess Rosie ’.’ Me and Savanna looked at each other . We both knew that she was right . So was Princess Rosie real ? I mean we did see it online . What was the truth ?
We continued our mystery investigation . As frustrating as this was , it was also starting to get really exciting . We re-read the letter again , desperately trying to find a clue . And … we got nothing . We began to get more and more discouraged .
‘ We ’ re never going to find out who this princess Rosie is . We should just give up . This is so frustrating and hopeless ,’ I thought .
Just then Savanna piped up , distracting me from my train of thought , ‘ Do you think anyone that works in the hotel knows what this is about ?’ I thought about it for a moment . Maybe Savanna was on to something . We did find the note and the necklace there .
We headed down to the hotel lobby , hoping to find answers . We walked over to the front desk giving a warm smile towards the woman sitting there . Savanna hands over the necklace as the woman ’ s eyes widen and her jaw drops , ‘ Where did you find this ?’ She asks . ‘ The hotel room ’ I reply . ‘ This necklace is , indeed very valued and precious . Did you find anything else ?’ I gave her the note we found . As she reads the letter , her eyes go back and forth concentrating on reading the letter . Her jaw dropped to the floor after she finished reading the letter . ‘ Do you think you can tell us something about the letter and the necklace ?’ Jade asks hopefully , ‘ We ’ ve been trying to find out information about these objects .’ ‘ I can tell you something will shock you .’ The clerk said .
‘ Rosie and Harry had a fight one night because of their families . Rosie ’ s father didn ’ t approve of Harry because they thought he was a poor servant for their family . Which was true . Harry was mad because Rosie didn ’ t say anything to defend Harry . Rosie would ’ ve said something , however , she was afraid that her father would hit her . That ’ s what she told Harry , and for some reason it made him even madder . They started to argue , and said things that they didn ’ t mean to say to each other . The day after , Harry was so upset and full of regret for fighting with Rosie . That was it . We didn ’ t know anything else . Until now , when you girls showed me this letter . The night after they argued , Rosie left her house and never came back .’
All three of us stood there in stunned silence , still trying to digest the information the woman , who ’ s name happened to be Claire , had just told us . ‘ She must have went to the Bund !’ Savanna exclaimed . Claire nodded . ‘ So she ’ s still missing ?’ I ask . ‘ I think it ’ s safe to say that the last place she went would be The Bund .’ Claire says , her lips pressed into a thin line .
A lot has happened over the past few days . The police kept searching for Rosie and Harry . They haven ’ t found anything yet , but everyone thinks so . And reporters have been blowing up my phone requesting interviews .
It ’ s crazy what just a crystal necklace and a letter can do .
