t was a fine Shanghai morning . Buildings with standing out balconies , wooden sampan boats along the Huangpu River and reflected sunlight from shiny black cars , were the first scene that came to the awakening
Raymond Liu ― the rickshaw puller who was in front of the window of his home .
“ Good morning , my dear city !” muttered Raymond . Raymond was one of the most optimistic poor people who really loved the city of Shanghai .
The first thought that came to Raymond was his daily routine . “ Firstly ,” said Raymond . “ I should go to the dumpling shop to eat some steamed buns .” He wore a clean but patched yellow tunic and looked in the mirror . A smart-looking face complete with a moustache looked back at him . He took his measly money out of his sock where he kept it safely and went straight through the busy streets with his old rickshaw .
Raymond arrived at the dumpling shop and found enough cash to buy some steamed buns . He quickly went to work . His rickshaw was the opposite of attractive . Therefore , many people did not choose to ride on Raymond ’ s rickshaw . As an optimist , Raymond was sure to serve at least someone .
“ Hey you !” Raymond heard . Almost at the same time , a woman climbed onto Raymond ’ s rickshaw . Raymond looked back . Apart from the stylish black-haired lady , there was a group of people with knives following her . Before he could look closely , the lady said hastily , “ Take me to the nearest police station . Fast !” Hearing the command “ Fast ” made Raymond seem more energetic . As fast as a telegraph signal , he zoomed across the road , avoiding the grand black cars .
Through the bays of river boats and the black and good-looking Ford cars , the racing rickshaw of Raymond ’ s sped with the bad guys following closely . People around the city dropped their jaws to the ground as the chase continued .
The police station was very close that time . When it was just a few turns to the police station , the horrible gangsters grabbed the lady .
“ Hands up , Ruan Lingyu !” threatened the leader of the gang , as Ruan Lingyu raised her hand like an obedient school student .
The leader sighed , “ Both hands , or you ’ ll feel my knife !”
Meanwhile , Raymond found out he was ignored by the mean bad guys whom he realised they were the Green Gang . He then ran to the hut-like telephone booth to dial for the police .
Chaotically , he picked a number from the emergency list on the wall .
“ Hello , there is a crime at 6 Nanking Road . Could you help us ?” asked Raymond .
“ Crime ? You mean fire , do you ? We ’ re the firemen !” replied the man at the other end .
Raymond was poor and could not afford money to learn . Therefore , he dialled accidentally to the firemen .
