I was blown away by the glittering chandeliers, the smell of the night - of perfume and alcohol, as well as the
glamorous people who intoxicated me with their pidgin English and manners. We hung around, chatted, almost
forgetting our purpose, when suddenly, “BANG!! BANG!! BANG!!”
We were caught in a gangster shootout!
We were quickly pulled out by the gangsters from the dance hall to a vehicle parked outside. As soon as we were
pushed into the backseat, it took off at the speed of lightning, leaving the door swinging open!
The car drove onto Sinan Road and screeched to a stop in front of a big house on Xiangshan Road. Dr.
Nakayama was quickly taken behind the heavy doors, leaving me alone in the vehicle.
When I opened my eyes again after what felt like forever, I saw sunlight coming through the overcast skies like
silver lined avenues leading to heaven. To my relief, a familiar figure stood in front of the windows with his back
facing myself. “Prof. Nakayama, is that you?”
“ I am not who you think I am, ” said Professor Nakayama soberly as he turned around. “ Call me Sun Zhi Guo,
the grandson of Sun Yat-sen and Soong Ching Ling - and so I just discovered. ”
“ What?!! ” Even as an experienced historian, I never knew that Sun and Soong had offspring!
The Professor explained that Dr. Sun Yat-sen wanted to keep his son away from danger after his birth so they
kept his father’s identity secret, but they lost touch due to the bombing of the President’s Office in Guangzhou.
With his health quickly deteriorating, Dr. Sun wanted to pass his plans for the country to someone reliable, in
order to finish his dream. So here we were, in Dr. Sun’s residence on Xiangshan Road, where Professor
Nakayama got to know his true identity and met his grandfather for the first and last time.
In Professor Nakayama’s, nay, Sun Zhi-guo’s hand, was the box that contained the unrealized economic plans of
Dr. Sun. How his grandfather has hoped to lead his country out of chaos and misery, and how sadly it has been cut
short by his untimely life. Somehow, as little pieces of information come together, it came to make sense. In fact,
Nakayama is Zhongshan - Dr. Sun’s alias - in Japanese!
Dr. Sun had to leave for Beijing. In his absence, we could not stay, and were brought back safely to 2016. Dr. Sun
died shortly after we left on March 12, 1925.

Now even though it is too late to change history, it is not too late to inspire the world with the love for a country
that is greater than love for himself. Professor Nakayama was determined to present Dr. Sun’s vision to the public.
The economic plans will be showcased from January to June, 2017 at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum in
commemoration of the 150th birthday of the founding father of Modern China.
