The Legend of the Dragon Lycee Francais de Shanghai, Molina, Franck - 9 I n 1914, a strong soldier named William Vinet was the chief of the Chinese army when Japanese soldiers came to China. One day the Japanese decided that they wanted half of China including Shanghai. But the Chinese emperor refused to give in. So, the Japanese got angry and started a war to conquer China. The war began in 1920 and ended in 1937. When the war started, there were less Chinese soldiers than Japanese. The Chinese army had 70,000,000 soldiers while the Japanese soldiers numbered 100,025,000. So, when the Japanese attacked, the Chinese built a very big wall to protect the city from the Japanese army. And on the wall, they set up many canons and catapults to bombard the Japanese soldiers when they tried to attack. Because the Japanese had more soldiers, they were winning the war. But one day a dragon showed up, because its cave had been disturbed by the Japanese soldiers. The dragon was angry and wanted revenge, so it decided to help the Chinese army to fight the Japanese. It flew high in the sky and knocked the Japanese soldiers off the wall, breathing fire on the army. Slowly the Chinese army managed to turn the Japanese army away with the help of the dragon. After many years of fighting, the war was finally over. And to thank the dragon for its help, the Chinese built a very big palace to replace the cave that was destroyed by the Japanese for the dragon to live in. They brought the dragon food as offerings. Now the Chinese use the dragon for battles and the dragon has become the favorite animal of the Chinese. THE END
