The Jade Hotel Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, Au, Ryan – 9 I n the city of Old Shanghai, Zhang Wen woke up to discover a mysterious thing. Mysterious monsters were popping out of the… ground! He was not the only one to find out. Neighbors screamed in terror and a man wearing jaguar skin yelped, “Save me!” Zhang Wen had no choice but to dive in front of him and shield him from the blow. The monster (actually evil spirit, called Mogwai) pounced at him. Zhang Wen took out a weird looking thing which sucked things up from his father (“use it well!”) and aimed it at the Mogwai. VOOM! The spirit got vacuumed inside .Still, the Mogwai managed to slash him, and---he died heroically. He landed in a fabulous place decorated with jewels. Wait. Did he just see a ghost pushing a baggage cart? This was no ordinary “place”, it was a hotel! A ghostly lady asked, “How may I help you?” “Yeah,” Zhang Wen said. “Where am I?” The lady said, “In the Hotel of Jade. Men who sacrifice their lives to help people end up here.” The hotel was quite fancy. Walls made out of jade, carts made out of jade, and the lamp? Jade. A ghost led him to his room. There was a TV, a bed, and a shower. That was pretty normal to him. He was about to sit down and grab the remote, but all of a sudden a giant horn sounded. Someone yelled, “The Mogwai are here!” Zhang Wen groaned. He went to the lift. Ding! It immediately went down. Zhang Wen heard a noise coming from behind. A Mogwai was on the lift! Instinctively, Zhang Wen grabbed a hand bar and whacked it on its head. The Mogwai yelped and dissolved. Zhang Wen also sneaked a fire extinguisher into his backpack. He found out that was also effective. In the main room, it looked like a disaster. The Mogwai ripped almost everything to shreds. Few people were left. The others--- Zhang Wen tried not to think about them. He sighed, telling the others, “We need a new game plan.” His old friend, Deng Bai, who died in a gas explosion while leading someone out of the area, said, “It’s time for my secret weapon,” as he pulled out a gigantic ring. Zhang Wen asked, “What on earth is that thing?” “Uhh… It’s a ring when activated will create a dimensional portal which sucks anything close to it and traps that creature in that dimension.” Zhang Wen declared, “Let’s split it, one for each of us. That way we can defend ourselves easily!” The team also included Yang Kao, who used to be a neurosurgeon, Kai Tan, a guard, and a new person, Chen Sung. They all split up, each carrying a part of the giant ring. Chen Sung looked shy. He immediately went away. Zhang Wen gasped, “There has to be a spy! How could the Mogwai even know where to find the hotel? Everyone here? Let’s go find the culprit!” Deng Bai gasped. “I know! It has to be Chen Sung! He ran away while all of us were talking!” “Let’s go and find him!” Yang Kao yelled. A Mogwai appeared. He snarled, “Don’t be too hard on Chen Sung, I was the spy.” “All this time you’ve been using his body?” Then, a wave of Mogwai charged. This time, they were ready. They turned on the weapons. Very quickly, the Mogwai got trapped. The one who tricked them got surrounded. Zhang Wen took out his fire extinguisher and ---whoosh! “Ooow! Ow!” he screamed. “Make it stop! Make it stop!” “Only if you tell us where is Chen Sung!” “I tied him to a cliff.” Later, they found Chen Sung and saved the hotel. Everyone was delighted. “I can’t believe it!” Zhang Wen said, “We’re official Mogwai hunters now!”
