She noticed the pin that the general wore, so she said, ‘General, the war is over, you are defeated.’ The general snorted, ‘The great Japanese army never surrendered!’ Ming was furious; she went forward and grabbed the general by his shirt, ‘Any final words?’ she hollered to the general. ‘No!’ he said and suddenly pulled out a revolver and shot Ming. Mei Ling felt like she had been hit in the gut suddenly, and her anger boiled and surfaced. She took her dagger out and without any hesitation; she stabbed it into the general’s heart. The next day, a celebration was held at the town plaza after it was already cleaned of all bodies and debris. Special statues of Ming were built everywhere. The citizens celebrated until the next day’s dusk. Although there may be dangers ahead, Shanghai had ‘lived’ to see another day.
